Types of Sewage Contamination: What They Mean & How We Clean Them
Not all water damage is the same — especially when it comes to sewage. At BlueHaven Water Damage & Restoration, we follow industry standards to classify water damage into three categories based on contamination. This ensures safe, thorough cleanup for Boise homes and businesses.
What Are the Categories of Water Damage?
The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) classifies water damage into three levels:
Category 1 – Clean Water
This is water from a clean source, such as:
- Broken supply lines
- Overflowing sinks or tubs (with no contaminants)
- Appliance malfunctions with clean water
If untreated, Category 1 water can deteriorate into Category 2 or 3 within 48 hours.
Category 2 – Gray Water
This water contains some contaminants and may cause illness with exposure. Common sources include:
- Washing machine or dishwasher overflows
- Toilet overflow without feces
- Water from sump pump backups
Gray water requires sanitizing and safe drying methods to prevent mold and bacteria growth.
Category 3 – Black Water (Sewage)
Black water is dangerously contaminated and poses serious health risks. It may include:
- Sewage backups
- Floodwater from rivers or streams
- Toilet overflows with feces
- Water with chemical or biological contaminants
Warning: Never attempt to clean black water yourself. It requires full PPE, biohazard cleanup protocols, and disposal procedures.
How We Clean Different Types of Sewage Damage
Category 1:
- Water extraction and drying
- Moisture monitoring
- Minimal sanitizing (if needed)
Category 2:
- Removal of affected porous materials (like carpet pad)
- Deep cleaning and antimicrobial treatment
- Air scrubbing to control odors and airborne bacteria
Category 3:
- Full PPE and containment setup
- Removal of all contaminated materials
- Disinfection with EPA-approved products
- HEPA filtration and odor neutralization
- Safe disposal of hazardous waste
